California CE REQUIREMENTS

How many CE hours do I need?
 

24 hours every 2 years, 4 hours of which must be in Ethics.

Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
 

  • Courses must be approved for lines of insurance for which license is held.
  • Ethics Requirement: All agents are required to complete 4 hours of Ethics every 2 years. Excess Ethics hours may not be carried forward to the next renewal.
  • Annuity Requirement: Agents who sell annuities must complete a one-time 8-hour approved Annuity Training course prior to selling annuities, then 4 hours every 2 years thereafter.
  • Long Term Care Requirement: Individuals who sell long-term care products in California must complete an intial 8 hours of California LTC. After completing the initial 8-hour training requirement, producers licensed 4 years or less must complete 8 hours of state-approved LTC training annually for the first 4 years of licensure. Producers licensed more than 4 years must complete 8 hours of state-approved LTC training in every 2-year license term.
  • Long Term Care Partnership Requirement: Individuals who sell long-term care partnership products in California must complete 16 hours of state-approved LTC partnership training. Of these 16 hours, 8 hours must be fulfilled in a state-approved classroom, and 8 hours must be fulfilled by taking a state-approved LTC self-study course. After completing the initial 16-hour training requirement, LTCP insurance producers must complete 8 hours of state-approved LTCP training in every 2-year license term, which must be fulfilled in a state-approved classroom.
  • Flood Requirement: All agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.
  • Homeowners Valuation: All California fire and casualty broker-agents and personal line broker-agents who negotiate or sell homeowners’ (HO) insurance will be required to complete a one-time 3-hour homeowners’ insurance valuation training course.

When do I have to complete my CE?
 

  • Life & Health or Fire & Casualty agents: The compliance date is the last day of the license issuance month every 2 years.
  • Adjusters: The compliance date is every EVEN year on May 31st.

The Department of Insurance requires agents to pay a $64 late fee if CE is completed late.

What are the state filing fees?
 

There is no state filing fee in California.

What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
 

Self-Study, Online, Classroom

What are the study requirements for my courses?
 

Agents should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Do the exams require monitoring?
 

No, Noble's self-study exams do not require monitoring. Students may refer to the course material as often as needed.

Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
 

Excess hours may be carried forward to the next year. Excess hours from an approved Ethics, Annuity or LTC course are carried over as general credit only. 

Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
 

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.

Are all agents required to complete CE?
 

The following exemption is available:

Agents who are 70 years or older and have held an insurance license in good standing for 30 years or more. This does not include an expemption from product specific training for LTC and Annuities.

When will my course completions be reported?
 

Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
