Connecticut CE REQUIREMENTS

How many CE hours do I need?
 

  • 24 hours every 2 years, 3 of which must be in Insurance Law & Regulation or Ethics
  • Individuals who became licensed during the first 12 months of the compliance period only need to earn 12 hours for the first renewal.

Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
 

  • At least 6 hours must be approved for lines of insurance for which license is held.
  • Insurance Law & Regulation or Ethics Requirement: All agents are required to complete 3 hours of Insurance Law & Regulation or 3 hours of Ethics every 2 years.
  • Long Term Care Requirement: Individuals who sell long-term care policies under the Connecticut Partnership Long-Term Care Program must complete a one time 7 hour training program sponsored by the Connecticut Partnership. Those completing the course will earn 8 hours of continuing education credit which may be applied to the overall 24 hour requirement.
  • Flood Requirement: All agents who have property and casualty and personal lines authority must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.
  • Annuity Requirement: Effective February 18, 2012, all producers currently licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours.

When do I have to complete my CE?
 

The compliance date is the agent's birthday every 2 years.

What are the state filing fees?
 

There is a filing fee of $3.75 per CE course.

What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
 

Self-Study, Online, Classroom

What are the study requirements for my courses?
 

Agents should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Do the exams require monitoring?
 

Yes, self-study exams must be monitored. Your Qualified Proctor must be:
A disinterested third party, someone who is not a relative or business associate.

Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
 

Carryover of excess hours is not allowed in Connecticut.

Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
 

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.

Are all agents required to complete CE?
 

The following exemptions are available:

  • Producers licensed only for credit or travel insurance do not have a CE requirement
  • Non-residents do not have a CE requirement (must be compliant in their resident home state to renew their CT license)
  • Adjusters
  • Those serving in US military on active duty outside Connecticut during substantial part of compliance period

When will my course completions be reported?
 

Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
