Iowa CE REQUIREMENTS

How many CE hours do I need?
 

  • 36 hours every 3 years, 3 hours of which must be in Ethics. Only 18 hours can be taken through correspondence or online.
  • Producers licensed for crop insurance only must complete 18 hours, 3 hours of which must be in Ethics. Only 9 hours can be taken through correspondence or online.

Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
 

  • Agents can take courses from any license type to complete their CE, however it would be preferred to take courses for their license type.
  • Ethics Requirement: All agents are required to complete 3 hours of Ethics every 3 years.
  • Annuity Requirement: Agents who sell annuities must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours by July 1, 2012.
  • Long Term Care Requirement: Individuals who sell long-term care products must complete an initial 8 hours of state approved LTC in a classroom setting, then a 4 hour follow-up every 2 years thereafter which may be completed thru self-study.
  • Flood Requirement: All agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.

When do I have to complete my CE?
 

The compliance date is the last day of the agent's birth month every 3 years.

What are the state filing fees?
 

There is a filing fee of $1.00 per CE credit hour.

What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
 

Agents must complete at least 50% of their required CE hours in a classroom setting. The remaining hours may be completed through online or self-study.

What are the study requirements for my courses?
 

Agents should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Do the exams require monitoring?
 

Yes, self-study exams must be monitored. Your Qualified Proctor must be:
A disinterested third party, someone who is not a relative or business associate.

Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
 

Carryover of excess hours is not allowed in Iowa.

Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
 

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.

Are all agents required to complete CE?
 

The following exemptions are available:

  • Attorneys licensed to sell insurance may be exempted upon submission of proof that they have complied with a continuing legal education requirement.
  • Individuals who are on extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Individuals licensed for credit insurance only.
  • Individuals licensed for crop insurance only.

When will my course completions be reported?
 

Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
