Ohio CE REQUIREMENTS

How many CE hours do I need?
 

24 hours every 2 years, 3 hours of which must be in Ethics.

Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
 

  • Agents can take courses from any license type to complete their CE.
  • Ethics Requirement: All agents are required to complete 3 hours of Ethics each renewal.
  • Annuity Requirement: Agents who sell annuities must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours.
  • Long Term Care Requirement: Individuals who sell long-term care products must complete an initial 8 hours of state approved LTC, then a 4 hour follow-up every 2 years thereafter.
  • Flood Requirement: All agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.

When do I have to complete my CE?
 

The compliance date is the last day of the agent's birth month every 2 years.

Agents must have their CE credit hours posted prior to their expiration date and prior to applying to renew their insurance license(s). Providers have 15 days to report your CE completions, so please plan accordingly to avoid a lapse in licensure.

What are the state filing fees?
 

There is a filing fee of $1.00 per CE credit hour.

What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
 

Self-Study, Online, Classroom

What are the study requirements for my courses?
 

Agents must read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Do the exams require monitoring?
 

  • Online final exams: Not required to be proctored. Once the exam is opened for an online course, access to the course material is restricted until the exam has been graded.

Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
 

Carryover of excess hours is not allowed in Ohio.

Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
 

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.

Are all agents required to complete CE?
 

The following exemptions are available:

  • Persons holding a limited authority license
  • Nonresident licensees in compliance with CE requirements for their home states
  • Nonresident licensees who completed a NAIC LTC training course in another state are exempt from taking the special training requirement in Ohio
  • Persons granted inactive license status by the State Director of Insurance

When will my course completions be reported?
 

Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
