Pennsylvania CE REQUIREMENTS

How many CE hours do I need?
 

24 hours every 2 years.

Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
 

  • Agents can take courses from any license type to complete their CE.
  • Long Term Care Requirement: All producers licensed to sell long-term care products in Pennsylvania prior to April 1, 2011 must complete an initial 8-hour training course on long-term care products by April 1, 2012. All producers licensed on or after April 1, 2011 must complete this training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products. After completing the initial 8-hour LTC training requirement, these individuals must complete 4 hours every 2 years thereafter.
  • Flood Requirement: All P&C agents must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.

When do I have to complete my CE?
 

The compliance date is the last day of the agent's birth month every 2 years.
The Department of Insurance requires agents to pay a $110 fine if CE is completed late.

What are the state filing fees?
 

There is a filing fee of $5.00 per CE course.

What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
 

Self-Study, Online, Classroom

What are the study requirements for my courses?
 

Agents must read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Do the exams require monitoring?
 

Yes, self-study exams must be monitored. Your Qualified Proctor must be:
A disinterested third party, someone who is not a relative or business associate.

Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
 

A maximum of 24 hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.

Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
 

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.

Are all agents required to complete CE?
 

The following exemptions are available:

  • Producers licensed prior to January 1, 1971, who have been continuously licensed without adding additional lines of authority
  • Producers whose only line of authority is a limited line
  • Public adjusters
  • Surplus Lines licensees
  • Nonresident insurance producers excluding Title producers Individuals exempted by the commissioner due to hardship or good cause such as disability or a medical condition
  • Individuals who first obtained licenses without examination under Section 609(c) of the Fraternal Benefit Societies Code and whose appointments are limited to fraternal benefit societies

When will my course completions be reported?
 

Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
