South Dakota CE REQUIREMENTS

How many CE hours do I need?
 

  • L/A&H or P&C agents:10 hours every 2 years
  • L/A&H and P&C combined agents: 20 hours every 2 years
  • Farm Mutual Producers; Personal Lines Producers: 10 hours every 2 years in P&C courses.
  • Crop hail agents: 4 hours every 2 years in crop insurance.

Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
 

  • Courses must be approved for lines of insurance for which license is held.
  • L/A&H and P&C combined agents must complete at least 8 hours approved for each license type.
  • Long Term Care Requirement: Individuals who sell long-term care products must complete an initial 8 hours of state approved LTC, then a 4 hour follow-up every 2 years thereafter.
  • Flood Requirement: All agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.

When do I have to complete my CE?
 

The compliance date is the last day of the agent's birth month every 2 years.

Resident producers: renewal date converted from 4/30/2012 to end of birth month in 2012. (Exception: January, February and March birth months will be converted to end of birth month in 2013.)

What are the state filing fees?
 

There is a filing fee of $1.00 per CE credit hour.

What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
 

Self-Study, Online, Classroom

What are the study requirements for my courses?
 

Agents should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Do the exams require monitoring?
 

No, Noble's self-study exams do not require monitoring. Students may refer to the course material as often as needed.

Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
 

Carryover of excess hours are not allowed in South Dakota.

Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
 

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.

Are all agents required to complete CE?
 

The following exemptions are available:

  • A producer holding a limited license to sell only credit life and credit health insurance
  • A producer outside the United States or its territories
  • A producer who is a resident attorney licensed to practice law in South Dakota
  • A producer who is a transportation ticket producer of common carriers holding a limited license to sell only travel accident and baggage insurance
  • A producer who is an employee of a trade association holding a limited license to sell only surety bonds to its association members
  • A producer who is licensed to sell only bail bonds
  • Individuals who are over age 65 and have been licensed in South Dakota for at least 10 years as of July 1, 2006.

When will my course completions be reported?
 

Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
