What are my CE requirements?
  • You must take 36 hours to renew your license. Only 18 hours can be taken through correspondence or online.
  • Producers licensed for crop insurance only must complete 18 hours. Only 9 hours can be taken through correspondence or online.

    Step 1: You must complete 3 hours of Ethics located in the State Specific Courses section.
    Step 2: You may be required to complete additional State Specific Courses.
    Step 3: The remaining hours can be selected from the Elective Courses section.

    Are there any state specific CE course subject requirements?
    • Agents can take courses from any license type to complete their CE, however it would be preferred to take courses for their license type.
    • Ethics Requirement: 3 hours Ethics every 3 years.
    • Annuity Requirement: One-time 4-hour Annuity course if you sell annuities.
    • Long Term Care Requirement: Initial 8-hour LTC Training classroom course, then a 4 hour refresher each renewal that may be completed thru self-study if you sell LTC.
    • Flood Requirement: One-time 3-hour flood insurance course if you sell flood insurance.
    When do I have to complete my CE?
    The compliance date is the last day of the agent's birth month every 3 years.
    What are the SBS filing fees?
    $1.00 per CE credit hour fee is charged by SBS who processes your course completions. This fee is required to be collected by every CE Provider, and the amount collected is remitted to SBS when your credits are reported.
    What are the allowed methods of completing CE?
    Agents must complete at least 50% of their required CE hours in a classroom setting. The remaining hours may be completed through online or self-study.
    What are the study requirements for my courses?
    Agents should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.
    Do the exams require monitoring?
    Yes, self-study exams must be monitored. Your Qualified Proctor must be:
    A disinterested third party, someone who is not a relative or business associate.

    If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
    Can excess hours be carried over to the next renewal?
    Carryover of excess hours is not allowed in Iowa.
    Can I repeat a course I've already taken?
    Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal.
    Are all agents required to complete CE?
    The following exemptions are available:
    • Attorneys licensed to sell insurance may be exempted upon submission of proof that they have complied with a continuing legal education requirement.
    • Individuals who are on extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces.
    • Individuals licensed for credit insurance only.
    • Individuals licensed for crop insurance only.
    When will my course completions be reported?
    Completions reported daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
    How long do I have to complete my courses?
    Access to your courses will expire 12 months from the date of purchase.
