Alabama CE requirements

How many CE hours do Alabama insurance agents need?

Alabama resident insurance producers must complete 24 approved CE hours, including 3 ethics hours, each two-year reporting period unless exempt. Independent adjusters also need 24 hours, including 3 ethics hours.

Every 2 years

Which Alabama CE requirement applies to me?

Resident life, health, property, casualty, or personal lines producer? 24 approved hours, including 3 ethics, every two years.
Office-only producer or service representative? 12 hours, including 2 ethics, only if employed to work exclusively in the employer’s office and not licensed as a nonresident elsewhere.
Resident independent adjuster? 24 approved hours, including 3 ethics, every two years.
Newly licensed or nonresident? First-renewal and reciprocal home-state exemptions may apply; confirm eligibility before claiming an exemption.

Alabama CE requirements by license

Alabama resident license Total CE Required category or format
Life, health, property, casualty, or personal lines producer 24 hours / 2 years 3 ethics hours included
Qualifying office-only producer or service representative 12 hours / 2 years 2 ethics; office-only employment and no nonresident license
Independent adjuster 24 hours / 2 years 3 ethics hours included
Producer holding multiple lines of authority One applicable producer total No separate 24-hour requirement for each line

A producer who also holds an independent adjuster license needs a total of 24 approved hours, not 48. Regulation 151 permits producer-approved courses to count toward the adjuster requirement. Confirm ethics and both license records.

Who qualifies for an Alabama CE exemption?

Exemptions include specified limited-line-only licenses, qualifying nonresidents who satisfy reciprocal home-state CE, and newly licensed individuals within the first 12 months. The first-renewal exemption must be claimed during NIPR renewal. Certain exemptions held before January 1, 2013 remain available only while their statutory conditions continue; obtaining a designation today does not create a new grandfathered exemption.

Deadline and renewal cycle

When is Alabama insurance CE due?

Use the exact date on your official license record.

CE must be completed and posted before renewal. Individual producer licenses renew by the last day of the birth month every two years: odd birth years renew in odd years, and even birth years renew in even years.

Producer renewal opens 90 days before the end of the birth month. ALDOI allows a 30-day late-renewal period with an additional fee; it is not a CE extension or a reason to delay completion.

ALDOI states that CE compliance may take at least 3–5 business days to update in NIPR. A passing course result alone does not mean the online renewal system is ready.

For an independent adjuster or another license type, follow the expiration and renewal instructions for that specific license. Keep the licensing email address current.

Official record

How do I check my Alabama CE transcript or status?

Open ALDOI’s Continuing Education page and select View and Print CE Transcript. In the official SBS record, select Alabama and locate the individual license and current reporting period.

  1. 1
    Correct license and period

Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.

  2. 2
    Total posted credit

Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.

  3. 3
    Required categories

Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.

  4. 4
    Completion history

Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.

What should I do if completed credit is missing?

Reporting timing. Regulation 110 requires provider filing within 10 days; for online or correspondence courses, the period runs from grading the final exam. ALDOI separately identifies a 3–5-business-day NIPR compliance-update delay.

1. Compare the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and awarded category with the completion record.

2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct a missing or rejected roster. Include the completion certificate or confirmation.

3. Recheck the official transcript after the correction. Contact the licensing authority if the provider confirms acceptance but the record remains incorrect.

Credits and eligibility

What courses count toward Alabama insurance CE?

Alabama CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.

Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
No. Alabama awards credit for an approved course only once in the same reporting period.
Can extra CE hours carry over?
No. Excess hours from an Alabama biennial reporting period do not carry to the next period.
Must courses match my line of authority?
No. Producers may take any Alabama-approved CE course regardless of their line of authority. Required ethics and product-training approvals must still be satisfied.
Do multiple producer lines require separate CE hours?
No. The applicable producer CE total covers all held producer lines of authority; it is not multiplied by the number of lines.
Do I submit completion certificates to ALDOI?
No. The approved provider reports course completions. Retain the completion record and verify the hours on the official transcript.

Course format

Can Alabama insurance CE be completed online?

Yes. Alabama accepts approved online, correspondence, classroom, and seminar courses. Both the provider and course must be approved for Alabama CE.

Online and correspondence study

Complete the approved course and final exam. Regulation 110 requires a passing grade of at least 70% and a proctor affidavit confirming no outside assistance.

Independent proctor

The proctor must be at least 18 and have no family relationship or financial interest in the result. A coworker cannot be above or below the student in the line of supervision.

The term classroom hour is a unit of approved credit, not a requirement to attend every course in person. Alabama’s rule applies that measurement to approved internet and correspondence courses too.

Product-specific training

What specialty training do Alabama insurance agents need?

Product training applies to the products sold, not every license holder. Complete required initial training before conducting the applicable business and track recurring training separately from license renewal.

Training Who needs it? Hours and frequency
Annuity best interest Producers selling annuities 4 hours, one time Complete current approved training before sales. Prior suitability training must also satisfy the best-interest update; insurer product training is separate.
Long-term care Producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance 8 hours initial; 4 hours every 24 months Initial training precedes LTC business. Ongoing training follows the biennial producer renewal cycle. A regular CE exemption does not remove LTC training.
NFIP flood Agents selling National Flood Insurance Program coverage At least 3 hours of flood training FEMA’s basic agent-training standard applies in addition to applicable state licensing and insurer requirements.

A product-training course can also provide regular CE credit when it has the required state approval. A general-credit course with a similar title does not establish product certification. Retain the completion record and provide it to the insurer when required.

Common questions

Alabama insurance continuing education FAQ

How many ethics hours are required in Alabama?

3 ethics hours are included in the standard 24-hour requirement. Qualifying office-only producers and service representatives need 2 ethics hours within their 12-hour total.

Are newly licensed Alabama producers exempt at first renewal?

Yes, if licensed for less than 12 months at first renewal. Claim the CE exemption during NIPR renewal; the renewal application and fee remain required.

Does CE renew my Alabama insurance license?

No. CE completion establishes educational eligibility. The individual must separately submit the renewal application and required payment.

Can a nonresident use home-state CE?

Yes, when home-state CE is completed and the state recognizes reciprocity with Alabama. Nonresidents whose home state has no CE requirement or does not reciprocate must meet Alabama’s requirement.
