Connecticut CE requirements
How many CE hours do Connecticut insurance agents need?
Nonexempt Connecticut resident producers need 24 approved hours per renewal period, including 3 hours of Connecticut law and regulations or ethics. Courses must meet the applicable credit category.
Which Connecticut CE requirement applies to me?
Connecticut CE requirements by license
| Connecticut resident license | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident life, health, property, casualty, or personal lines producer | 24 hours / renewal period | 3 Connecticut law/regulations or ethics included |
| Resident life settlement broker only | 15 hours / 2 years | Life and health credit |
| Nonresident producer | Exempt from standard Connecticut CE | Product certification may still apply |
| Credit-only or travel-only producer; adjuster or appraiser | Exempt from standard producer CE | Follow the requirements for the specific license |
The first producer renewal period may be shorter than two years. Do not assume a new Connecticut license eliminates CE. Check the actual expiration date and official compliance record.
Does Connecticut waive CE for age or experience?
No general age- or experience-based waiver applies. The handbook identifies exempt license categories and permits qualifying military or emergency waiver requests through CID. An exemption from standard CE does not eliminate required product training.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Connecticut insurance CE due?
Connecticut individual producer licenses renew every two years by the last day of the birth month. Required CE must be completed and posted to the record before the renewal is submitted.
Renewal opens 90 days before expiration. Check the current license record rather than assuming a full two-year first term.
Provider reporting can take up to 15 calendar days. Complete courses early enough for the official compliance record to update.
A late-renewal route does not extend the active license term. Follow CID’s reinstatement instructions if the license has expired.

How do I check my Connecticut CE transcript or status?
Follow the SBS license and CE links on CID’s licensing page. Check the active license, renewal period, total credit, and Connecticut law/regulations or ethics category.
-
1
Correct license and period
Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.
-
2
Total posted credit
Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.
-
3
Required categories
Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.
-
4
Completion history
Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.
What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. Approved providers must report completions within 15 calendar days. Retain the completion certificate and confirm the posted SBS record before attempting renewal.
1. Compare the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and awarded category with the completion record.
2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct a missing or rejected roster. Include the completion certificate or confirmation.
3. Recheck the official transcript after the correction. Contact the licensing authority if the provider confirms acceptance but the record remains incorrect.

Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Connecticut insurance CE?
Connecticut CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a course for CE credit?
- A course earns credit only once within the same renewal period. It may be repeated for credit in a subsequent period.
- Can extra CE hours carry over?
- Yes. Connecticut permits up to 24 excess hours to carry to the next renewal period. Confirm the carried credit on the official transcript.
- Does Connecticut require ethics only?
- The required 3-hour category is Connecticut law and regulations or ethics. Use a course approved for the applicable category.
- Must CE be posted before renewal?
- Yes. Completing a course is insufficient until the required credit is recorded and the license record shows CE compliance.
- Do nonresident producers need Connecticut CE?
- Nonresident producers are exempt from Connecticut’s standard producer CE requirement. Annuity and Partnership certification can still apply.

Course format
Can Connecticut insurance CE be completed online?
Yes. Connecticut accepts approved online courses. Complete the course and its approved examination or attendance conditions to earn credit.
Approved online study
Select Connecticut-approved courses in the correct credit category and follow the provider’s approved completion procedure.
Proctored examinations
Use an independent proctor who meets the handbook’s eligibility conditions. Relatives, friends, business associates, and prohibited supervisory or financial relationships do not qualify.
Remote proctoring
The Connecticut handbook permits remote proctoring. Use the course provider’s authorized process; remote availability depends on the course.
Do not infer an exam’s score, book-use rule, or proctor method from another state’s course. Follow the approved Connecticut course instructions.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Connecticut insurance agents need?
Product training applies to the products sold, not every license holder. Complete required initial training before conducting the applicable business and track recurring training separately from license renewal.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity best interest | Producers conducting annuity business | 4 hours, one time Use current approved best-interest training. The prior-training 1-hour update window ended August 31, 2022; CID’s FAQ requires the 4-hour course after that deadline. |
| Connecticut Partnership LTC certification | Resident and nonresident producers discussing, marketing, or selling Partnership policies | One-time certification; eligible for 10 CE credits Complete OPM-approved training and pass the exam. OPM identifies 7 life/health and 3 law/regulations/ethics credits. Certification has no renewal-training requirement. |
| NFIP flood | Agents selling National Flood Insurance Program coverage | At least 3 hours of flood training Complete FEMA-standard training and any applicable state or insurer requirements. |
A product-training course can also provide regular CE credit when it has the required state approval. A general-credit course with a similar title does not establish product certification. Retain the completion record and provide it to the insurer when required.

Common compliance mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a new license always has a full two-year first term.
- Submitting renewal before CE has posted.
- Treating Connecticut Partnership certification as an 8-hour/4-hour recurring LTC rule.
- Claiming a standard CE exemption based only on age or years licensed.
