Georgia CE requirements

How many CE hours do Georgia insurance agents need?

Georgia resident licensees subject to standard CE need 24 approved hours, including 3 ethics hours, each biennial license period. Experience and qualifying designations can reduce the total, but not the 3-hour ethics requirement.

3 ethics required category
Every 2 years

Which Georgia CE requirement applies to me?

Resident licensee with the standard requirement? 24 hours, including 3 ethics, every two years.
Continuously licensed for at least 20 years? 20 hours, including 3 ethics, under Rule 120-2-3-.15. Confirm the reduction on the official transcript.
Holder of an accepted insurance designation? 12 hours, including 3 ethics, after submitting the required designation documentation.
Credit-only, limited subagent, or workers’ compensation adjuster? Separate requirements apply; use the license-specific rows below.

Georgia CE requirements by license

Georgia license type Total CE Required category or format
Resident agent or adjuster with the standard CE requirement 24 hours / 2 years 3 ethics hours included
Qualifying continuously licensed, experienced licensee 20 hours / 2 years 3 ethics; experience reduction confirmed in the state record
Approved designation or qualifying risk-management degree holder 12 hours / 2 years 3 ethics; proof of qualification required
Credit insurance only 10 hours / 2 years Credit self-study; no ethics requirement
Limited subagent only 10 hours / 2 years Approved subjects for the held authority; no ethics requirement
Workers’ compensation adjuster only 20 hours / 2 years Courses approved by the State Board of Workers’ Compensation; no ethics requirement

The OCI CE page announces automatic experience reductions beginning in 2026 for licensees with more than 20 years of service. The rule uses continuously licensed for 20 years or longer. At the 20-year boundary, confirm the assigned requirement with OCI before purchasing a reduced-hour package.

Who qualifies for a Georgia CE reduction or exemption?

Accepted designation qualifications include CPCU, CLU, FLMI, CIC, CEBS, ChFC, AAI, CFP, and an accredited BBA with a major in Risk Management and Insurance. Submit proof for the 12-hour reduction. Nonactive licensees are CE-exempt while nonactive but must still renew. Illness, military service, or other qualifying circumstances require an approved reduction or exemption request before the CE due date.

Deadline and renewal cycle

When is Georgia insurance CE due?

Use the exact date on your official license record.

Complete the assigned CE requirement before license expiration. Georgia individual renewal is due by the last day of the birth month in the applicable renewal year; the standard CE reporting period is two years.

OCI permits agent renewal beginning 60 days before expiration. CE completion does not replace the separate renewal application and payment.

Use Sircon to confirm the license period, required categories, applied hours, remaining hours, and compliance status. Allow time for provider reporting before renewing.

Late filing and reinstatement can involve additional fees, penalties, and other requirements. An expired license does not authorize insurance business.

Official record

How do I check my Georgia CE transcript or status?

Open Georgia’s Sircon portal and select the continuing education transcript service. Check the current license period, required subjects, compliance summary, and any carried-forward credits.

  1. 1
    Correct license and period

Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.

  2. 2
    Total posted credit

Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.

  3. 3
    Required categories

Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.

  4. 4
    Completion history

Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.

What should I do if completed credit is missing?

Reporting timing. The approved provider reports completed courses. Verify that each completion appears in the correct license period and credit category before submitting renewal; a course certificate alone is not a renewed license.

1. Compare the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category with the completion certificate.

2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct any missing or rejected roster. Include the completion record.

3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if the provider confirms acceptance but the record remains incorrect.

Credits and eligibility

What courses count toward Georgia insurance CE?

Georgia CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.

Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
No. Georgia awards CE credit for the same course only once in the same reporting period.
Can extra CE hours carry over?
Yes. Georgia permits carryover up to 50% of the applicable biennial requirement: 12 hours for a 24-hour requirement, 10 for 20 hours, or 6 for 12 hours.
Can excess ethics hours satisfy next period’s ethics requirement?
No. Carried-forward excess ethics hours apply to eligible license-authority credit, not the next period’s ethics requirement. Complete 3 approved ethics hours in each applicable period.
Must courses match my licensed authority?
Yes. Georgia CE must be approved for a subject area in which the individual is licensed, except for applicable ethics credit and other specifically allowed credit.
Which completion date determines the reporting period?
Georgia awards approved individual-study and online course credit in the renewal period in which the course is completed, not the later period in which reporting occurs.

Course format

Can Georgia insurance CE be completed online?

Yes. Georgia accepts approved online and individual-study courses. The delivery method and completion assessment must meet Georgia’s course-approval rules.

Correspondence and individual study

Successful completion requires a proctored final examination. Complete the approved course’s exam and required completion documentation.

Approved online courses

Online courses require interaction and assessments. System proctoring is permitted when completion, passing, and time can be tracked and verified; otherwise, in-person proctoring is required.

An online delivery label does not establish an exemption from assessment or monitoring. Follow the completion method stated for the specific Georgia-approved course.

Product-specific training

What specialty training do Georgia insurance agents need?

Product-specific training is required only for the applicable business. Complete initial training before conducting that business and track recurring training separately from the license expiration date.

Training Who needs it? Hours and frequency
Annuity best interest Producers selling annuities 4 hours, one time Complete current approved best-interest training before annuity business. The historical 1-hour update window ended January 31, 2024; producers who missed it must complete the 4-hour course.
LTC Partnership Agents selling Georgia Partnership policies 8 hours initial; 4 hours every 24 months Initial training includes Georgia Medicaid content. A resident using another state’s qualified Partnership training must also complete the required 2-hour Georgia-specific Medicaid course.
NFIP flood Property agents selling NFIP policies 3 hours, one time Complete approved NFIP-related training. Georgia’s rule permits the approved course to count toward CE and ethics as applicable to its approval.

Product training counts toward regular CE only when the course also has the applicable state CE approval. A similarly named general-credit course does not establish product certification. Retain certificates for insurer verification.

Check residency, license type, renewal date, experience reduction, and any approved designation qualification in the official record.

  2. 2

    Complete current-period credit

Finish the remaining approved total and ethics. Apply only eligible carryover and complete required product training.

Confirm posted categories and compliance. Ask the provider to correct missing or rejected credits before renewal.

  4. 4

Common compliance mistakes to avoid

  • Applying an experience or designation reduction before it is confirmed in the state record.
  • Using carried-forward ethics credit instead of current-period ethics.
  • Selecting a course outside the held license authority.
  • Assuming an old 1-hour annuity update remains available after its deadline.

Common questions

Georgia insurance continuing education FAQ

Does Georgia require 3 hours of law instead of ethics?

No. The standard requirement includes 3 hours approved for ethics. A law or regulatory course satisfies that requirement only when its approved credit category qualifies as ethics.

Does holding a designation remove Georgia CE?

No. An accepted designation can reduce the requirement to 12 hours after proof is submitted. The reduced total still includes 3 ethics hours.

Does completing CE automatically renew a Georgia license?

No. Complete CE and separately submit the renewal application, required documentation, and fees. Confirm active license status after OCI processes the application.

Can nonactive Georgia licensees sell insurance without CE?

No. The nonactive CE exemption does not authorize insurance transactions. Nonactive licensees must still renew and satisfy applicable requirements before resuming active business.
