Idaho CE requirements
How many CE hours do Idaho insurance agents need?
Idaho’s CE requirement is 24 approved hours, including 3 ethics hours, during each two-year license period for resident producers subject to CE, bail agents, independent adjusters, and public adjusters.
Which Idaho CE requirement applies to me?
Idaho CE requirements by license
| Idaho license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident producer subject to CE | 24 hours / 2 years | 3 ethics hours included |
| Resident independent adjuster | 24 hours / 2 years | 3 ethics hours included |
| Resident public adjuster | 24 hours / 2 years | 3 ethics hours included |
| Resident bail agent | 24 hours / 2 years | 3 ethics hours included |
| Limited-line-only, nonresident producer, or business entity | Standard CE exempt | License renewal and applicable product training remain separate |
Use the individual license record to determine whether CE applies to the held authority. A surplus lines license does not create a separate CE total, but an underlying resident producer license can still require CE.
Who is exempt from Idaho CE?
Idaho DOI lists nonresident producers, business entities, limited-line-only licensees, and surplus lines licenses as exempt from standard CE. Holding an insurance designation does not create an exemption. Product-training and license-renewal requirements must be evaluated separately.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Idaho insurance CE due?
Idaho individual licenses expire on the last day of the birth month in the applicable two-year renewal cycle. Complete CE and allow the credits to post before submitting electronic renewal.
Idaho DOI recommends completing CE at least three weeks before license expiration. Providers have 30 days to report, and reporting is not instantaneous.
Posted SBS credit transfers to the Producer Database overnight. DOI identifies an additional 1–5-business-day database update period before electronic renewal may be available.
There is no CE grace period. An expired license becomes inactive; late renewal can require additional penalties or reexamination depending on timing. Do not transact insurance until the license is active.

Official record
How do I check my Idaho CE transcript or status?
Use SBS License Manager, select Idaho, and locate the individual license. Check the current CE period, course numbers, completion dates, total hours, ethics hours, and compliance status.
-
1
Correct license and period
Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.
-
2
Total posted credit
Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.
-
3
Required categories
Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.
-
4
Completion history
Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.
What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. Approved providers must report completions within 30 days. SBS-to-database transfer and renewal-system updates add processing time. Idaho DOI recommends a three-week completion buffer rather than relying on last-day reporting.
1. Compare the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category with the completion certificate.
2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct any missing or rejected roster. Include the completion record.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if the provider confirms acceptance but the record remains incorrect.

Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Idaho insurance CE?
Idaho CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
- No. Idaho grants credit for the same course only once per CE period. The course may be repeated for credit in a later period.
- Can extra CE hours carry over?
- No. Idaho does not carry excess hours from one CE period to the next.
- Must CE courses match my line of authority?
- No. Idaho permits approved CE courses in any category regardless of the held authority. The 3-hour ethics requirement and applicable product-training requirements still apply.
- How long must I keep Idaho completion certificates?
- Keep Idaho CE completion certificates for 5 years. The provider reports completions; submit certificates to DOI only if requested.
- Does an insurance designation exempt me from Idaho CE?
- No. Idaho DOI states that insurance designations do not exempt a licensee from the applicable CE requirement.

Course format
Can Idaho insurance CE be completed online?
Yes. Idaho accepts approved internet, correspondence, and other self-study courses, as well as approved classroom and webinar courses. Self-study completion requires an examination.
Approved self-study
Idaho requires an exam as the completion method for self-study courses. Complete the assessment and documentation specified for the approved course.
Classroom and webinar instruction
Instructor-led courses require monitored attendance and participation. Credit may be withheld for late arrival, early departure, or failure to meet the attendance criteria.
Verify the Idaho course approval, credit hours, and category before purchase. A course approved only in another state is not automatically approved for Idaho CE.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Idaho insurance agents need?
Product-specific training is required only for the applicable business. Complete initial training before conducting that business and track recurring training separately from the license expiration date.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity best interest | Producers selling annuities | 4 hours, one time Complete the current approved best-interest training before annuity transactions. Insurer product training and verification remain separate. |
| Long-term care | Producers selling LTC insurance | 8 hours initial; 4 hours every 24 months Idaho measures the 24-month refresher interval between course-completion dates, not license renewal dates. Initial training precedes LTC business. |
| NFIP flood | Agents selling NFIP policies | 3 hours, one time Complete approved flood training and retain evidence for the insurer. Verify that CE credit is approved for Idaho. |
Product training counts toward regular CE only when the course also has the applicable state CE approval. A similarly named general-credit course does not establish product certification. Retain certificates for insurer verification.

Common compliance mistakes to avoid

- Assuming a designation creates an Idaho CE exemption.
- Measuring the LTC refresher from license renewal rather than the prior training date.

Common questions
Idaho insurance continuing education FAQ
How many Idaho ethics hours are required?
3 approved ethics hours are included in the standard 24-hour CE requirement for each two-year period.
Can I renew before my Idaho CE credits post?
No. The electronic renewal system must receive compliant CE status. A passing exam or completion certificate does not replace posted credit.
Does Idaho offer a CE grace period?
No. Idaho DOI states that there is no CE grace period. An expired license becomes inactive; late-renewal penalties and reexamination requirements depend on the timing.
Does completing CE renew my Idaho insurance license?
No. CE establishes educational compliance. Submit the separate renewal application and required fees, then confirm active license status.
