Iowa CE requirements
How many CE hours do Iowa insurance agents need?
Iowa resident producers subject to standard CE need 36 approved hours, including 3 ethics hours, per three-year license term. Crop-only producers and public adjusters have different totals and reporting periods.
Which Iowa CE requirement applies to me?
Iowa CE requirements by license
| Iowa license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident producer subject to standard CE | 36 hours / 3 years | 3 ethics hours included |
| Resident crop-only producer | 18 hours / 3 years | 3 ethics; applicable federal RMA training is separate |
| Public adjuster | 24 hours / 2 years | 2 ethics hours included |
| Credit-only or surety-only authority | Standard CE exempt | An additional authority can change CE eligibility |
| Producer holding multiple authorities | Applicable producer total | Not a separate 36-hour requirement for every authority |
Producer license terms expire on the last day of the birth month, but Chapter 11 requires proof of CE compliance to reach the Division by the last business day of the license term. These dates can differ when month-end falls on a weekend or holiday.
Who qualifies for an Iowa CE exemption or alternative?
Exemptions include qualifying nonresidents who meet home-state CE, credit-only or surety-only authority, attorneys who document required professional education, and qualifying full-time active-duty military service with proof. Iowa also permits the appropriate producer licensing examination for each held authority as an alternative compliance method when completed within 90 days before expiration and documented to the Division.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Iowa insurance CE due?
Iowa producer licenses generally expire on the last day of the birth month every three years. Proof of CE compliance must be received by the Division by the last business day of the license term, before electronic renewal.
Producer renewal opens 90 days before expiration. Check the actual SBS license term and CE record; do not apply another state’s two-year cycle.
Allow time for provider reporting. Passing a self-study exam does not by itself establish the state’s posted compliance or renew the license.
There is no producer renewal grace period. An expired license does not authorize transactions; reinstatement and reapplication requirements depend on how long it has been expired.

Official record
How do I check my Iowa CE transcript or status?
Use SBS License Manager, select Iowa, and locate the individual license. Compare the recorded term, approved course numbers, completion dates, total credit, required ethics, and compliance status.
-
1
Correct license and period
Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.
-
2
Total posted credit
Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.
-
3
Required categories
Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.
-
4
Completion history
Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.
What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. Chapter 11 requires providers to submit completion rosters by the 10th day of the month following the completion month. Certificates must be issued within 20 days. Verify posted credit before the last-business-day compliance deadline.
1. Compare the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category with the completion certificate.
2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct any missing or rejected roster. Include the completion record.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if the provider confirms acceptance but the record remains incorrect.

Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Iowa insurance CE?
Iowa CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
- No. Iowa grants credit for the same CE course only once during a license term.
- Can extra CE hours carry over?
- No. Iowa does not carry unused or excess CE hours from one license term to the next.
- Does Iowa require a classroom-hour minimum?
- No. Current Iowa Chapter 11 permits approved self-study and does not impose a 12-hour classroom minimum for the standard producer CE requirement.
- When is an Iowa self-study course considered completed?
- An Iowa self-study course is considered completed when the provider receives the completed examination. The later roster-reporting date is not the course-completion date.
- How long must I keep Iowa CE certificates?
- Keep CE completion certificates for 4 years after the end of the calendar year in which the course was completed.

Course format
Can Iowa insurance CE be completed online?
Yes. Iowa accepts approved self-study, including online courses. Self-study requires an independently proctored final exam, at least 70% to pass, and a proctor affidavit verifying compliance.
Approved self-study examination
Earn at least 70% on the approved exam. The independent proctor supervises completion without outside assistance and completes the required affidavit.
Completion and reporting
The course is completed when the provider receives the completed exam. The provider then issues the certificate and submits the completion roster under Chapter 11.
Current Iowa CE rules allow approved self-study without a classroom-hour minimum. Product-specific training and the applicable ethics category must still be satisfied.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Iowa insurance agents need?
Product-specific training is required only for the applicable business. Complete initial training before conducting that business and track recurring training separately from the license expiration date.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuities | Producers conducting annuity business | 4 approved credits, one time Complete the required annuity training before applicable business and satisfy insurer verification and product-training requirements. |
| Indexed products | Producers advising on or presenting indexed products | 4 approved credits, one time Iowa has a separate indexed-product training requirement. Complete it before providing advice or a sales presentation; do not assume annuity training alone satisfies it. |
| Long-term care | Producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC | 8 hours initial; 4 hours each CE term Training includes Iowa Medicaid and Partnership content. The ongoing requirement follows each CE term, not a generic 24-month interval for a three-year producer license. |
| NFIP flood | Agents selling NFIP policies | At least 3 hours of basic flood training Retain evidence of completion for insurer verification. Only Iowa-approved CE credit counts toward the license total. |
Product training counts toward regular CE only when the course also has the applicable state CE approval. A similarly named general-credit course does not establish product certification. Retain certificates for insurer verification.

Common compliance mistakes to avoid
- Using a two-year CE cycle for a standard Iowa producer license.

- Waiting past the last business day when month-end falls on a weekend.
- Assuming annuity training replaces Iowa’s separate indexed-product training.
