Kansas CE requirements
How many CE hours do Kansas insurance agents need?
Most resident insurance agents must complete 18 approved CE hours every two years. The total includes 3 hours in ethics; regulatory compliance may satisfy the ethics requirement.
Which Kansas CE requirement applies to me?
Kansas CE requirements by license
| Kansas license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident agent with standard insurance authority | 18 hours / 2 years | 3 ethics or qualifying regulatory compliance |
| Crop insurance only | 2 hours / 2 years | Certified crop-insurance courses |
| Title insurance only | 4 hours / 2 years | Certified title-insurance courses |
The crop-only and title-only rules apply only when that is the licensee’s sole insurance authority. Use the official license record to identify the assigned requirement.
Who is exempt from Kansas CE?
Bail-bond-only, travel-only, and self-service-storage-only agents are exempt. Preneed-only agents must submit the required affirmation and insurer certification. Approved inactive status and qualifying active military service have separate statutory conditions. A medical or military extension requires Department approval.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Kansas insurance CE due?
Complete CE by the last day of your birth month in the applicable biennial year. An odd-numbered birth year uses odd-numbered due years; an even-numbered birth year uses even-numbered due years.
NIPR accepts resident renewal applications during the 90 days before expiration.
Allow time for reporting and renewal-system updates. NIPR notes that CE compliance can take up to 72 hours to update after submission.
Missing the CE deadline can trigger automatic suspension. The statutory reinstatement process and penalties are separate from ordinary renewal.

Official record
How do I check my Kansas CE transcript or status?
Use SBS to select Kansas and review the license’s current CE period, applied courses, categories, and outstanding hours.
-
1
Correct license and period
Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.
-
2
Total posted credit
Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.
-
3
Required categories
Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.
-
4
Completion history
Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.
What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. Kansas providers must report completions to SBS within 10 days. Reporting does not replace the separate license renewal application.
1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.
2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct a missing or rejected completion record.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.

Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Kansas insurance CE?
Kansas CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
- No. Kansas grants credit for the same course only once during a biennium.
- Can I complete hours for a future biennium?
- CE courses must be completed during the applicable biennial period. Complete the current period’s requirement using courses eligible for that period.
- Must courses be approved for my license?
- Yes. Courses must have Kansas approval in an eligible insurance classification. Applicable ethics and general courses may also qualify under the course approval rules.
- Do prelicensing or sales-promotion courses count?
- No. License-exam preparation, mechanical office skills, and courses primarily promoting insurance sales do not qualify for Kansas CE credit.
- How long must I retain completion records?
- Keep Kansas CE certificates through the remainder of the current biennium and the entire following biennium.

Course format
Can Kansas insurance CE be completed online?
Kansas accepts approved online and self-study CE courses. Credit requires successful completion using the method approved for the course.
Online and self-study
Complete all course requirements and the approved assessment. The Department’s current guidance does not require independently monitored exams for these course formats.
Classroom courses
Meet the approved attendance requirement. The statute does not require an examination for classroom course credit.
Approval check
Verify the course’s Kansas approval, credit hours, and eligible category before enrollment.
A provider’s completion method must match its current state approval. Do not infer an exam or proctor requirement from the course title alone.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Kansas insurance agents need?
Complete required product training before selling the applicable product. Initial training and recurring training are separate requirements; state CE credit requires the course’s corresponding approval.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity best interest | Agents selling annuities | 4 initial hours Complete current approved training before annuity business. Insurer product training is separate. |
| LTC Partnership | Agents selling Kansas Partnership policies | 4 initial hours; 1 hour each later biennium Kansas requires its state-certified Partnership training. These hours are not the generic 8-hour/4-hour rule used in some states. |
| NFIP flood | Agents selling NFIP flood insurance | 3 initial hours Complete training meeting the federal flood-insurance education standard. |
Confirm the course approval, product-training designation, and insurer acceptance before enrolling. Retain completion certificates. General CE compliance alone does not establish product-training compliance.
