Which Kentucky CE requirement applies to me?

Kentucky amended its CE statute effective July 15, 2026. Limited-line exemptions depend on the Commissioner’s exemption for that authority; confirm the current assigned requirement rather than assuming every limited line is exempt.

Who qualifies for a Kentucky CE exemption?

Exemptions include qualifying reciprocal nonresidents, licensees with less than one full year before the first biennial deadline, and licensees restricted to renewal or deferred commissions under a supporting affidavit. Limited-line exemptions are determined by the Commissioner. Military relief and good-cause extensions require an approved request.

Deadline and renewal cycle

When is Kentucky insurance CE due?

Use the exact date on your official license record.

Complete CE by the last day of your birth month in the applicable biennial year. Even-numbered birth years use even-numbered compliance years; odd-numbered birth years use odd-numbered compliance years.

A first deadline occurring before one full year of licensure moves to the next applicable biennium.

The statutory proof-of-compliance reporting period does not extend the deadline for completing the required courses.

NIPR renewal opens 90 days before expiration. CE completion, reporting, and the renewal application remain distinct steps.

Official record

How do I check my Kentucky CE transcript or status?

Sign in to Kentucky DOI eServices to review the license record and applied CE. Use the Department’s course search to verify course approval before enrolling.

  1. 1
    Correct license and period

Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.

  2. 2
    Total posted credit

Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.

  3. 3
    Required categories

Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.

  4. 4
    Completion history

Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.

What should I do if completed credit is missing?

Reporting timing. Kentucky providers must report successful completions within 30 days. The licensee is responsible for verifying that the certificate was submitted and applied to the license record.

1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.

2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct a missing or rejected completion record.

3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.

Credits and eligibility

What courses count toward Kentucky insurance CE?

Kentucky CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.

Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
No. Kentucky grants CE credit for the same course only once during a biennial compliance period.
Can extra CE hours carry over?
Yes. Kentucky permits up to 12 excess credit hours to carry into the next biennium. Carryover is general credit; complete the required ethics hours for the new period.
Do courses need Kentucky approval?
Yes. Only courses approved by the Commissioner qualify for Kentucky CE credit. Verify the approved course number, hours, and any required subject designation.
Does self-study require an examination?
Yes. Kentucky requires successful examination completion for a self-study CE course. A course purchase or unfinished examination does not earn credit.
Can exam preparation or computer-skills training count?
No. Licensing-exam preparation, functional computer training, motivational courses, and professional-committee service do not qualify for Kentucky CE credit.

Course format

Can Kentucky insurance CE be completed online?

Kentucky accepts approved classroom, correspondence, and online self-study courses. All required hours may be completed through approved self-study courses.

Online self-study

Complete the approved course and pass its required examination. Check the provider’s approved examination procedures.

Classroom or live online

Meet the course’s participation requirements; one credit hour requires at least 50 minutes of instruction.

Approved course search

Search the DOI list for current approval, credit hours, and ethics or product-training categories.

Self-study approval does not remove the examination requirement. Do not assume that every course with similar wording has the same approved credit category.

Product-specific training

What specialty training do Kentucky insurance agents need?

Complete required product training before selling the applicable product. Initial training and recurring training are separate requirements; state CE credit requires the course’s corresponding approval.

Training Who needs it? Hours and frequency
Annuity best interest Life agents selling annuities 4 initial hours Complete current approved training before annuity business. Qualifying substantially similar out-of-state training may be accepted.
LTC Partnership Resident agents selling Partnership policies 8 initial hours; 4 hours each biennial CE period The recurring Partnership requirement is separate from the initial course.
NFIP flood Property and casualty agents selling NFIP policies 3 initial hours Complete training meeting the federal flood-insurance education standard.

Confirm the course approval, product-training designation, and insurer acceptance before enrolling. Retain completion certificates. General CE compliance alone does not establish product-training compliance.
