Maryland CE requirements
How many CE hours do Maryland insurance agents need?
Most resident producers and public adjusters need 24 approved CE hours every two years, including 3 ethics hours. Required course categories depend on the held authorities.
Which Maryland CE requirement applies to me?

| Title, life/health, and property/casualty | 24 hours / 2 years | 6 each category + 3 any category + 3 ethics |
| Public adjuster only | 24 hours / 2 years | 21 public-adjuster + 3 ethics |
Additional combinations, including public adjuster plus producer authority, have category-allocation rules. Check the Administration’s requirement chart and your assigned record before selecting courses.
Who qualifies for a Maryland CE exemption or reduction?
Limited-authority-only producers and qualifying reciprocal nonresidents are exempt from standard resident CE. A Maryland attorney holding only title authority may qualify for an exemption. Experience and age reductions are historical grandfather provisions with fixed eligibility dates, not automatic benefits for every current long-service or older producer.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Maryland insurance CE due?
Complete Maryland CE at least 15 days before license expiration. The individual producer license generally expires on the last day of the birth month in the applicable two-year renewal cycle.
The 15-day early deadline is separate from the license expiration date. Finishing CE on the expiration date does not satisfy this requirement.
The Administration’s course requirement chart recommends completing courses 30 days early. That planning recommendation does not replace the current 15-day mandatory deadline.
An expired producer license may be eligible for reinstatement within one year, subject to delinquent requirements and an additional reinstatement fee.

Completion history

What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. Maryland providers must report completions within 10 days. Allow time for reporting before the 15-day early CE deadline and the separate renewal filing.
1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.
2. Ask the course provider to confirm submission and correct a missing or rejected completion record.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.

Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Maryland insurance CE?
Maryland CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a course for additional credit?
- No. Maryland prohibits duplicate credit for the same course in one renewal period and for a repeat completed within six months, even across different periods.
- Can extra CE hours carry over?
- No. Maryland does not carry excess ordinary CE course hours into the next renewal period.
- Can any general course satisfy every category?
- No. Courses must have approval in an eligible category, and producers holding multiple authorities must meet each required category allocation.
- Do reduced-hour producers still need ethics?
- Yes. Maryland’s qualifying reduced CE requirement still includes 3 approved ethics hours in the applicable renewal period.
- How long must I keep CE certificates?
- Maryland requires licensees to retain CE completion certificates for at least four years after course completion.

Course format
Can Maryland insurance CE be completed online?
Maryland accepts approved online CE for all required hours. The course must satisfy the approved delivery and completion requirements and the licensee’s required credit category.
Online and self-study
Complete the approved course and any required examination or verification. Check the provider’s current completion procedures.
Live courses
Meet the approved attendance and participation requirements for the awarded hours.
Category selection
Verify life/health, property/casualty, title, public-adjuster, ethics, and any specialty designation before enrollment.
Online eligibility does not remove category allocations or product-training requirements. Verify recorded compliance rather than adding purchased course hours.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Maryland insurance agents need?
Complete required product training before selling the applicable product. Initial training and recurring training are separate requirements; state CE credit requires the course’s corresponding approval.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity best interest | Producers selling annuities | 4 initial hours Complete current approved training and required insurer product training before annuity business. |
| Long-term care | Health producers selling LTC insurance | 2 hours each renewal period This Maryland LTC CE requirement is distinct from Partnership initial and recurring training. |
| LTC Partnership | Producers selling Partnership policies | 8 initial hours; 4 hours every 2 years Confirm the course’s Partnership designation and recurring-training eligibility. |
| Flood-related CE | Producers selling flood, homeowners, or commercial property insurance | 2 property/casualty hours each renewal period Maryland’s recurring requirement is separate from the federal 3-hour initial NFIP training standard. |
| Bail bonds | Property/casualty producers selling bail bonds | 4 property/casualty hours each renewal period Complete approved bail-bond CE within the current period. |
Confirm the course approval, product-training designation, and insurer acceptance before enrolling. Retain completion certificates. General CE compliance alone does not establish product-training compliance.
