New Jersey CE requirements
How many CE hours do New Jersey insurance agents need?
New Jersey requires 24 approved credits for resident producers holding CE-subject authority. One of the 3 required professional-ethics credits may be replaced by 1 approved insurance-fraud credit.
Which New Jersey CE requirement applies to me?
New Jersey CE requirements by license
| New Jersey license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident producer with life, health, property, casualty, personal lines, title, surplus lines, or variable authority | 24 credits / 2 years | 3 professional ethics; 1 may be insurance-fraud credit |
| Limited-lines-only producer | Exempt from ordinary producer CE | Product or program training may still apply |
| Public adjuster | 15 credits / 2 years | Public-adjuster-approved education |
New Jersey lists bail bond, car rental, credit, travel, pet, legal, self-storage personal property, and group mortgage cancellation as limited authorities without ordinary producer CE.
Which New Jersey producers are exempt from ordinary CE?
A producer holding only listed limited-line authority is exempt from the 24-credit requirement. Qualifying reciprocal nonresidents satisfy CE through their home state. A New Jersey attorney licensed only for title may use the rule’s certificate-of-good-standing procedure.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is New Jersey insurance CE due?
Complete and report required New Jersey CE before renewing. Individual licenses renew biennially on the last day of the birth month.
The renewal window opens 90 days before expiration.
New Jersey allows a 30-day renewal grace period without a late fee; this does not extend the license expiration date or authorize business after expiration.
From day 31 through one year after expiration, use late renewal and pay applicable state fees. After one year, requalification is required.

Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.
-
2
Total posted credit
Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.
-
3
Required categories
Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.
-
4
Completion history
Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.
What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. New Jersey providers must report successful course completions within 15 days. Verify the PSI transcript before submitting renewal.
1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.
2. Ask the provider to confirm the roster submission and correct a missing or rejected completion.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.
Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward New Jersey insurance CE?
New Jersey CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a New Jersey course for credit?
- No. A producer may receive credit for one successful completion of a particular approved course during the licensing term.
- Can New Jersey CE credits carry over?
- Yes. Up to 12 excess eligible credits may carry once into the next renewal term. Ethics credits do not carry over.
- Can insurance-fraud credit replace ethics?
- Yes, but only 1 of the 3 required professional-ethics credits may be replaced with 1 approved insurance-fraud credit.
- Do prelicensing courses count as New Jersey CE?
- No. New Jersey does not allow prelicensing education to satisfy continuing education credit.
- Who corrects a missing New Jersey course?
- The producer must ask the education provider to submit a corrected or supplemental report to the Department or its CE recordkeeping vendor.
Course format
Can New Jersey insurance CE be completed online?
New Jersey accepts approved self-study and interactive online courses. A noninteractive self-study course culminates in a monitored examination; an interactive online course may be approved without a monitor when internal testing and access controls validate completion.
Interactive online
Complete the course’s internal testing and access-control requirements. An outside examination monitor is not required when the Department approves those controls.
Noninteractive self-study
Complete the approved material and monitored final examination under the provider’s instructions.
Contact courses
Each credit hour includes at least 50 minutes of instruction, excluding breaks and announcements.
The approved course type determines whether a monitored examination is required. Do not infer the rule from the word “online” alone.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do New Jersey insurance agents need?
Product-specific training applies only to the relevant business. Complete initial training before selling the product and track recurring training separately.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity best interest | Producers selling annuities | 4 initial hours Complete approved training before annuity business; insurer product training is separate. |
| Long-term care Partnership | Producers selling Partnership LTC policies | 8 initial hours; 4 hours every 24 months Confirm the course’s New Jersey Partnership designation. |
| NFIP flood | Property or personal-lines producers writing flood insurance | 3 initial hours The first applicable renewal includes approved NFIP training within the ordinary CE total. |
A product-training course counts toward ordinary CE only when it also carries the applicable state CE approval. Retain the completion certificate for insurer verification.

Does completing New Jersey CE renew my license?
No. CE completion and license renewal are separate. Verify reported compliance, file the required renewal, and confirm active status.
