North Carolina CE requirements

How many CE hours do North Carolina insurance agents need?

North Carolina requires one 24-credit total during each biennial compliance period, regardless of how many CE-subject licenses are held.

24 hours standard total
3 ethics required category
Every 2 years

Which North Carolina CE requirement applies to me?

Resident producer or adjuster subject to CE? Complete 24 approved credits during each two-year compliance period, including 3 ethics credits.
Property, personal lines, or adjuster authority? Complete 3 flood-insurance credits in the first compliance period and every other compliance period after that, which is every four years.
More than one CE-subject license? Complete one 24-credit total, not 24 credits for each license.
Nonresident producer? North Carolina generally relies on active home-state compliance and does not impose ordinary North Carolina CE.

North Carolina CE requirements by license

North Carolina license type Total CE Required category or format
Resident producer with life, accident and health, property, casualty, personal lines, or variable authority 24 credits / 2 years 3 ethics
Resident adjuster 24 credits / 2 years 3 ethics; flood when scheduled
Property, personal lines, or adjuster authority 24 credits / 2 years 3 ethics + 3 flood in first and every other period
Qualifying nonresident producer Home-state compliance Maintain active home-state license

North Carolina awards CE in General, Ethics, and Flood categories. The ordinary total is not divided by each held line of authority.

Who may receive a North Carolina CE waiver?

A producer unable to comply because of military service or long-term medical disability may request a waiver. The waiver is not automatic and must be approved through the state’s CE administrator.

Deadline and renewal cycle

When is North Carolina insurance CE due?

Use the exact date on your official license record.

Complete North Carolina CE by the last day of the birth month in the assigned odd- or even-numbered compliance year.

A licensee born in an odd-numbered year reports in odd-numbered compliance years; a licensee born in an even-numbered year reports in even-numbered compliance years.

Failure to complete the total or mandatory categories causes the affected license to expire for CE noncompliance.

The licensee then has four months to complete the requirement and submit the $75 reinstatement request. After that period, a new license may require prelicensing education and examination.

Official record

How do I check my North Carolina CE transcript or status?

Use the North Carolina Sircon education record to confirm the compliance date, posted total, ethics credit, scheduled flood credit, and compliance status.

  1. 1
    Correct license and period

Confirm the active license record, CE period, and compliance or review date.

  2. 2
    Total posted credit

Compare the posted hours with your requirement after any valid exemption, reduction, or carryover.

  3. 3
    Required categories

Check ethics, law update, flood, delivery method, or product-specific categories separately.

  4. 4
    Completion history

Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.

What should I do if completed credit is missing?

Reporting timing. Providers must report North Carolina course completions within 15 business days. Contact the provider if a completion is still missing after the reporting and processing period.

1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.

2. Ask the provider to confirm the roster submission and correct a missing or rejected completion.

3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.

Credits and eligibility

What courses count toward North Carolina insurance CE?

North Carolina CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.

Can I repeat a North Carolina course for credit?
No. The same approved course earns credit only once during a biennial compliance period.
Can North Carolina CE credits carry over?
Yes. Credits above the required 24 carry into the next biennial period as general credit. Excess ethics and flood credits do not satisfy the next period’s mandatory categories.
Do multiple licenses require separate 24-credit totals?
No. One 24-credit total applies regardless of how many CE-subject licenses are held.
Is flood credit required every two years?
No. Property, personal-lines, and adjuster licensees complete 3 flood credits in the first compliance period and every other period after that, or every four years.
Does a producer file a separate biennial renewal application?
North Carolina producer licenses do not use an ordinary renewal application. Producers maintain authority by satisfying CE and other license-status requirements. Other license types may have separate renewal steps.

Complete the approved material and the assessment required by the course approval.

Product-specific training

What specialty training do North Carolina insurance agents need?

Product-specific training applies only to the relevant business. Complete initial training before selling the product and track recurring training separately.

Training Who needs it? Hours and frequency
Annuity best interest Producers selling annuities 4 initial hours Complete approved training before annuity business; insurer product training is separate.
Long-term care Producers selling long-term care insurance 8 initial hours; 4 hours every 24 months Recurring training must remain current for continued long-term care sales.
Flood category Property, personal-lines, and adjuster licensees 3 hours every 4 years This North Carolina CE category applies even when the licensee does not regularly sell or adjust flood coverage.

A product-training course counts toward ordinary CE only when it also carries the applicable state CE approval. Retain the completion certificate for insurer verification.
