How many CE hours do Ohio insurance agents need?

Ohio resident agents licensed for life, accident and health, property, casualty, or personal lines generally must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education during each renewal period. At least 3 hours must be approved as ethics, and those ethics hours are included within the 24-hour total.

Who is exempt from Ohio insurance CE?

Deadline and renewal

When is Ohio insurance CE due?

Complete CE before you submit your renewal.

After the initial license expiration date, most Ohio resident agents renew by the last day of their birth month every two years.

Ohio sends a renewal reminder to the email address on the agent’s record at least one month before expiration. Not receiving the reminder does not change the agent’s responsibility to complete CE and renew on time.

Providers have up to 15 calendar days after completion to submit a course roster. Although credit is earned on the completion date, finish early enough to verify every required category on the official transcript.

Official record

How do I read my Ohio CE transcript?

Your Ohio transcript—not a course receipt or private account page—is the record to check before renewing. Review these four items in order.

  1. 1
    Compliance status

Look for the status tied to your active renewal period and confirm the correct license record.

  2. 2
Total credit for the current cycle

Compare posted credits with your total requirement and renewal dates.

  3. 3
    Ethics and required categories

Confirm that ethics, title, surety, or other required categories are satisfied—not just the overall hour count.

  4. 4
    Completion history

Check course titles and dates for repeated courses, missing completions, and any general carryover credit.

What should I do if completed credit is missing?

1. Confirm your completion details. Check the name and license number used, course title, completion date, and certificate.

2. Allow for reporting time. Ohio permits providers up to 15 calendar days to report. Noble submits completions daily, but state posting time may vary.

3. Contact the course provider. Send the completion certificate and identifying details so the provider can research the roster.

4. Verify before renewing. Do not assume a certificate alone means the state record is compliant.

Credits and eligibility

What courses count toward Ohio insurance CE?

Ohio CE credit is awarded only for a course and education provider approved by the Superintendent of Insurance. The course must match the required credit category and applicable renewal period.

Can I repeat a course?
No. Ohio awards credit only for the first completion of a course during the same renewal period. Repeating it in that period does not earn additional credit.
Can extra hours carry over?
Yes. Up to 50% of the next renewal period’s CE requirement may carry over. For a 24-hour requirement, the maximum is 12 hours.
Does carryover satisfy ethics?
No. Ohio applies carried hours as general credit. The ethics requirement must be completed separately during the new renewal period.
Which date is used for credit?
The course completion date determines the renewal period in which credit applies. The later transcript posting date does not change the applicable period.
Can I take courses outside my line?
Yes. Agents licensed for life, accident and health, property, casualty, or personal lines may generally complete approved courses in any line. Specialized licenses and mandatory categories remain subject to their own restrictions.

Course format

Can Ohio insurance CE be completed online?

Yes. Ohio approves online self-study continuing education. The exact completion controls depend on the approved course format:

Interactive online course

Uses chapter or section questions. The agent must answer all questions correctly before advancing. A separate final exam is not required for this approved format.

Course with a final exam

The exam is available only after the course material is completed. A score of at least 70% is required to receive CE credit.

Ohio also requires participants to certify that the course and any examination were completed without improper assistance. Review the course description to understand its approved completion method.

Product-specific training

What specialty training do Ohio insurance agents need?

These requirements apply when an agent sells, solicits, or negotiates the related product. They are not extra requirements for every agent.

Training Who needs it? Hours and frequency
Annuity Best Interest Agents selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuities 4 hours, one time Complete before annuity sales activity
Long-Term Care Partnership Agents selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance 8 hours initially Then 4 hours in each applicable renewal period
NFIP Flood Property and casualty producers selling federal flood insurance 3 hours, one time Minimum federal NFIP training

Ohio annuity training requirement

An agent may not sell, solicit, or negotiate annuities until completing a one-time, four-credit course from an approved CE provider. The course addresses annuity types, parties, contract features, taxation, uses, sales practices, replacement, and disclosure requirements.

Ohio long-term care training requirement

Before selling long-term care insurance, an agent must complete an initial eight-hour Partnership Program training course. Beginning with the first renewal period after that training, an agent who sells LTC must complete at least four hours of qualifying LTC education in every license renewal period.

Common questions

Ohio insurance continuing education FAQ

How many CE hours do Ohio insurance agents need?

Ohio resident insurance agents with a life, accident and health, property, casualty, or personal lines license generally need 24 approved continuing education hours during each two-year renewal period. At least 3 of the 24 hours must be approved as ethics.

When is Ohio insurance continuing education due?

After the initial license expiration date, most Ohio resident insurance agents renew by the last day of their birth month every two years. The required CE must be completed before the renewal application is submitted.

Can Ohio insurance CE be completed online?

Yes. Ohio approves online self-study courses. An interactive course may use chapter or section knowledge checks instead of a final examination. If a course uses a final examination, the agent must score at least 70% to receive credit.

Can an Ohio CE course be repeated?

No. Ohio awards credit only for the first completion of a course during the same renewal period. Repeating it in that period does not earn additional credit.

Do extra Ohio CE hours carry over?

Yes. Up to 50% of the next renewal period’s CE requirement may carry over. For a 24-hour requirement, the maximum is 12 hours. Carried hours apply as general credit and do not replace the ethics requirement.

Who is exempt from Ohio’s regular CE requirement?

The current Ohio rule exempts agents who have been granted inactive status and agents who hold only limited-lines licenses. Title-only and surety-bail-bond agents follow separate CE requirements rather than the standard 24-hour requirement.

How quickly must providers report Ohio CE credit?

Ohio requires providers to file a completion roster no later than 15 calendar days after course completion. Credit is considered earned on the completion date, but agents should verify that it appears on the official transcript before renewing.

Do nonresident agents have to complete Ohio CE?

Ohio’s regular insurance CE requirement applies to resident agents. Nonresident agents generally maintain CE through their home state, although Ohio or federal product-specific training can still apply when selling annuities, long-term care insurance, or NFIP flood insurance.
