Tennessee CE requirements
How many CE hours do Tennessee insurance agents need?
Tennessee resident producers complete 24 approved credits in conjunction with each biennial license renewal. Three credits must have an ethics concentration.
Which Tennessee CE requirement applies to me?
Tennessee CE requirements by license
| Tennessee license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident insurance producer | 24 credits / 2 years | 3 ethics |
| Resident public adjuster | 24 credits / 2 years | Approved courses including ethics |
| Multi-peril crop adjuster | 24 credits / 2 years | Approved courses including ethics |
| Qualifying nonresident producer | Home-state compliance | Reciprocal treatment required |
Tennessee producer courses are not restricted to the line of authority held, but the separate ethics minimum and any product-specific training must still be satisfied.
Who is exempt from Tennessee producer CE?
An insurance producer continuously licensed since January 1, 1994 is exempt from ordinary producer CE. The state also permits extensions or exceptions for poor health, military service, or another reasonable and just cause when approved by the Commissioner.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Tennessee insurance CE due?
Complete Tennessee CE and renew the producer license by the last day of the birth month in the assigned biennial renewal year.
The producer license renews every other year on or before the end of the producer’s birth month.
Providers have up to 30 days to report completion, so last-minute courses can delay the state record.
CE compliance does not replace the renewal application and fee.

Completion history
Look for missing courses, duplicate or zero credit, incorrect dates, and misclassified completions.
What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. Tennessee providers must transmit successful course completions electronically within 30 days. Keep certificates for the most recent two-year period.
1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.
2. Ask the provider to confirm the roster submission and correct a missing or rejected completion.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.

Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Tennessee insurance CE?
Tennessee CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- How many Tennessee CE credits may carry over?
- Up to 12 excess credits may carry into the next renewal cycle as general credit. Carryover does not satisfy the next cycle’s 3-credit ethics requirement.
- Can I repeat a Tennessee CE course for credit?
- Only after two years have passed since the prior credited completion. A repeat inside that two-year period does not earn new credit.
- Does Tennessee self-study CE require a final exam?
- Yes. Every approved correspondence or self-study program must include a final examination.
- When must the provider report Tennessee CE?
- The provider must electronically report a successful completion within 30 days after the program.
- Must Tennessee CE match the producer’s line of authority?
- No. Approved producer courses may be used regardless of the line held, but ethics and product-specific training remain separate requirements.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Tennessee insurance agents need?
Product-specific training applies only to the relevant business. Complete initial training before selling the product and track recurring training separately.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity | Producers selling annuities | 4 credits, one time Complete Department-approved training before annuity sales. |
| Long-term care | Producers selling long-term care products | 8 initial hours; 4 hours every 24 months The recurring course remains required for continued sales. |
| NFIP flood | Property or property-and-casualty producers selling federal flood insurance | 3 hours, one time The course can count toward the 24-credit total for one biennium. |
