Virginia CE requirements
How many CE hours do Virginia insurance agents need?
Virginia bases the total on the number of license types held. A resident with one CE-subject license type, or both life and annuities plus health, completes 16 credits. A resident with two or more other license types completes 24 credits, including at least 8 applicable to each type.
Which Virginia CE requirement applies to me?
Virginia CE requirements by license
| Virginia license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| One producer or consultant license type | 16 credits / 2 years | 3 ethics |
| Life and Annuities plus Health only | 16 credits / 2 years | 3 ethics |
| Two or more license types | 24 credits / 2 years | 3 ethics + at least 8 applicable to each type |
| Resident public adjuster | 24 credits / 24 months | 3 ethics |
Virginia treats life and annuities plus health as a 16-credit combination. Adding property/casualty, title, personal lines, or another CE-subject type can raise the total to 24.
When is a new Virginia license exempt from first-cycle CE?
If the first license expiration occurs within 13 months after issuance, CE is not due for that first renewal. The renewal application is still required. The Virginia CE Board may also approve a full or partial waiver for good cause.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Virginia insurance CE due?
Complete the required Virginia credits by the license expiration date, which is the last day of the birth month in the odd or even year matching the licensee’s birth year.
Renewal opens 90 days before expiration.
Virginia CE is due at renewal, and the state may take up to five business days to process the renewal.
A license may be reinstated within 12 months after expiration after all missing CE is completed and the reinstatement application and fees are submitted.

What should I do if completed credit is missing?
Reporting timing. The approved provider reports Virginia completions. Check the transcript after the provider’s reporting period and contact the provider first if a completion is missing.
1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.
2. Ask the provider to confirm the roster submission and correct a missing or rejected completion.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.
Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Virginia insurance CE?
Virginia CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can I repeat a Virginia CE course for credit?
- No. The same course, including a different format based on the same published material, earns credit only once during the biennium.
- Can Virginia CE credits carry over?
- No. The current SCC requirements page states that excess credits do not carry into the next renewal cycle.
- How many credits must apply to each Virginia license type?
- When 24 credits are required for two or more license types, at least 8 credits must apply to each license type held.
- Can insurer-provided courses supply every required credit?
- No. No more than 75% of the required credits may come from courses provided by insurance agencies or insurance companies.
- Does an online Virginia CE course require a proctor?
- No. Virginia does not require a proctor for an approved online course. Paper self-study examinations can have separate proctor requirements.
Course format
Can Virginia insurance CE be completed online?

Course title alone is not enough. Confirm that the approval applies to the license type that needs credit.

Product-specific training
What specialty training do Virginia insurance agents need?
Product-specific training applies only to the relevant business. Complete initial training before selling the product and track recurring training separately.
| Training | Who needs it? | Hours and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Annuity best interest | Producers selling annuities | 4 hours, one time Complete the current best-interest standard course before annuity sales; transition training applied to earlier courses. |
| Long-term care Partnership | Producers selling Virginia Partnership policies | 8 initial hours; 4 hours every 24 months Training must cover long-term care and Partnership topics. |
| NFIP flood | Producers selling federal flood insurance | 3 hours, one time Complete training satisfying the federal NFIP minimum. |
A product-training course counts toward ordinary CE only when it also carries the applicable state CE approval. Retain the completion certificate for insurer verification.
