Washington CE requirements
How many CE hours do Washington insurance agents need?
Washington requires 24 approved CE hours during each license continuation period for resident producers licensed for personal lines, life, disability, property, casualty, or variable life and variable annuity authority. Three hours must be approved as ethics.
Which Washington CE requirement applies to me?
Washington CE requirements by license
| Washington license type | Total CE | Required category or format |
|---|---|---|
| Resident producer: life, disability, property, casualty, personal lines, or variable products | 24 hours / renewal period | 3 ethics |
| Resident adjuster | 24 hours / renewal period | 3 ethics; adjusting or property/casualty subject matter |
| Limited credit, travel, or surety only | No ordinary CE | Maintain renewal and applicable product training |
Courses must be completed inside the current renewal cycle. A course completed before the prior expiration date or after the current expiration date does not satisfy the current cycle.
Which Washington licenses are exempt from ordinary CE?
Individuals holding only limited credit, travel, or surety licenses are exempt. Medical or military waivers require a timely request and supporting documentation from the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

Deadline and renewal cycle
When is Washington insurance CE due?
Complete 24 hours, including 3 ethics hours, before the license expiration date shown on the Washington record. The credits must fall within the current renewal cycle.
Washington permits online renewal beginning 90 days before expiration.
A late renewal may be filed for up to 60 days after expiration with late fees, but the license is not active during the lapse.
Reinstatement after the late-renewal period requires current CE and the state reinstatement process.

Reporting timing. The approved provider must file the completion roster electronically within 10 days and issue the completion certificate within 10 days. Keep each certificate for at least three years.
1. Match the course number, completion date, license number or NPN, and credit category to the completion certificate.
2. Ask the provider to confirm the roster submission and correct a missing or rejected completion.
3. Recheck the official transcript. Contact the licensing authority if an accepted completion remains missing or incorrect.
Credits and eligibility
What courses count toward Washington insurance CE?
Washington CE credit is awarded only for a state-approved course completed through a state-approved provider. The course must match the required credit category and applicable license period.
- Can Washington CE credits carry over?
- No. Credit earned above the requirement cannot be carried into the next license renewal period.
- Can I repeat a Washington CE course for credit?
- Not within the same renewal period. A course with the same course number earns credit only once during that period.
- What score is required on a Washington self-study exam?
- A score of at least 70% is required on the multiple-choice final examination for an approved self-study course.
- When must Washington CE be reported?
- The approved provider must file the electronic completion roster within 10 days after the licensee completes the course.
- How long must I keep Washington CE certificates?
- Keep ordinary CE certificates for three years. Keep product-training certificates while transacting that business and never for less than three years.
